Mackinac Island Fudge: A Chocolate Lover's Dream

Fudge as a Souvenir
Mackinac Island (pronounced Mackinaw) is located between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan in Lake Huron near the Straits of Mackinac.
Because of its location, beauty, and ban on motorized vehicles, it has become a favorite vacation spot for those who enjoy the combination of tourism and nature, especially during the summer. However, one of its most prized souvenirs, Mackinac Island fudge, is especially appealing to chocolate lovers all year round.
Michigan Candy Making History
Candy making has become an island tradition after the first fudge shop opened in the late 1800s. Some confectioners boast being in the business for over a century. Salt-water taffy, nut brittles, caramel corn and toffee are just some of the other island treasures served up for guests. But it's the fudge that has become a household name not just for Michiganders but for other areas in the region.
Fudgies are Welcome
The use of quality ingredients is the hallmark of Mackinac Island fudge and what keeps the tourists coming back. In fact, island inhabitants have dubbed the tourists "fudgies." This has became a general term for tourists on the island whether they buy fudge or not.
The candy makers swear by using real cream and butter as well as providing a selection of flavors to keep their customers happy. Fudge lovers can choose the traditional chocolate as well as chocolate walnut, chocolate peanut butter, caramel pecan, vanilla, and rocky road to name just a few.
Fudge Made Before Your Eyes
Another special attraction during the summer season is watching the fudge being made fresh. Children and adults alike can watch the fudge being cooked, then poured onto a marble slab. The fudge is then cooled and flipped into loaves.
Some of these loaves are left as is and others are cut to be sold by the slice. It is best served at room temperature and can be kept this way for two weeks. Fudge also freezes well and can be defrosted at room temperature or in the microwave.

Mackinac Island Fudge is Everywhere
Although the small island doesn't allow motor vehicles, the candy makers have arrived in the digital age. Most shops do close during the winter season. Others are open year round however and have websites from which customers can place orders.
Some grocery stores carry the fudge, especially during the special holiday seasons such as Valentine's Day and Christmas. Mackinac Island fudge makes the perfect gift for a favorite chocolate lover in the family or a special reminder of happy times on the island.

Miss the U.P.
I remember visiting Mackinaw Island as a child with my grandparents. I remember watching the fudge being made as well as riding around the island in a horse and carriage. It was over 35 years ago, but I stil remember the horse's names were Cherry and Blossom!
That's fun to look at. Very entertaining and interesting making of choco fudge.
