Can a Sports Outfitter Provide a Wildlife Education?

Cabela's, the large outdoor sports outfitter, is a great place to get your hunting, fishing and camping gear. But did you know that you it can make a great family trip for education and fun? With all of the wildlife displays throughout every store, you can teach your kids about the great outdoors all the while your shopping for supplies to enjoy your next adventure.

Here is my photographic tour of some of the sights to see at Cabela's in Dundee, Michigan. Sit back and relax and enjoy the trip. I hope it encourages you to visit a store near you.

A Bear of an Entrance

I was hoping for a sunny day to get a picture of this impressive sculpture of two bears wrestling over what looks like the remains of food near their feet. But even with the clouds, these guys still pack a punch.

It was created by artist Mike Hamby and is titled "Fierce Encounter." It's one of the largest outdoor bronze wildlife sculptures in the world. I tried to capture some of the detail he put into it with the photo above. It's a beautiful piece that is crafted by a true wildlife lover.

Conservation Mountain

Conservation Mountain is a huge display in the middle of the store. It follows the four seasons with scenes of wildlife in each one. It is filled with North American big and small game.

The first picture below is that of the waterfall flanked by rams and deer. The following four pics were also taken at various places around the mountain.  They capture a glimpse of the craftsmanship of the displays and the construction of the mountain itself.

The Chase is On Through the Seasons

The next two pictures are of a bobcat chasing a hare during different seasons. The bear looks like he could be ready to pounce (or take a nap). In the winter scene, it looks like the wolves are about to have the bison surrounded but could be in for a fight.

Bragging Rights

This is a portion of a panoramic view.  There are several pictures of the Cabela family and their hunting trophies interspersed throughout the scene.  It was a busy day with many visitors and I couldn't get a good picture of the entire view.

Don't Forget the Small Ones

Here are a couple pics of smaller wildlife. The beavers are just being their busy selves, and the raccoon looks like it just wants to be much closer to dry land.

Wall Murals, Mounts and More

The mountain mural below is placed over the in-store restaurant that serves wild game. It's just one more special touch that Cabela's adds to keep to the theme.

Conservation Mountain isn't the only place you'll find wildlife. All you have to do is look up anywhere in Cabela's to see deer and fish all mounted beautifully on the walls or brick columns.

There are also stuffed birds hanging from the ceiling and an aquarium. Unfortunately, I didn't get a good picture of the aquarium, but be assured that it's a treasure like the rest of the store.

Cabela's has created an ambiance throughout each store to make customers feel they've brought the outdoors in.

The last time I was at the Dundee store was before hunting season and I couldn't help but wonder how many acres of camo clothing could one store stock.
